About the Breed
|
Northern Reindeer (male)
|
The original Finnish Lapphunds were bred by the Sami tribe, a semi-nomadic people from Lapland (the northern regions of Finland, Sweden, Norway, and part of Russia). Their job was to protect people & herd reindeer. The breed still retains a strong herding instinct for reindeer, sheep, ducks and more.
Between 1940 - 1990, the breed became protected in Finland and a breeding program was established to save the breed that had dwindled as a result of the two world wars and the industrial revolution. The Finnish Lapphund increased in popularity as a pet across Finland, and in 2005 was the 3rd most popular breed in the country. Finnish Lapphunds first came to Australia in 1995-2000 and this began the first organised efforts to import breeding dogs and establish the Finnish Lapphund in this country. Today there are considerable efforts made by Australian Finnish Lapphund breeders to promote genetic diversity and protect the breed, as occurs in Finland. Many dogs have been imported from Finland and the importation of both dogs and frozen semen continues in an effort to keep the gene pool for the breed in this country as diverse as the gene pool in Finland. The Finnish Lapphund has adapted very well to conditions in Australia and can be found all the way from Tasmania to the Northern Territory. Their double coat acts as insulation from extreme sun and heat, and as such a Finnish Lapphund would never be shaved or clipped even in warm climates. |
Unique Qualities
|
Independent
All Spitz dogs are independent, being required to think actively for themselves when working in remote conditions. This makes them vastly different from other breeds, e.g. labradors, as they are quite content to simply explore and spend some time on their own when it suits them. While a Finnish Lapphund is not as independent as a Siberian Husky, it will demonstrate some independence. |
Vocal
The Finnish Lapphund is a vocal dog and this quality was utilised often when herding reindeer. While not as vocal as a Siberian Husky, they can make great alert dogs. Most dogs can be trained to restrict their bark to excited barking while playing with other dogs. Frequent barking in residential areas is best avoided with regular training and exercise. |
Herders
As natural herding dogs, the Finnish Lapphund loves to chase and round up children and other dogs during play. They are very suitable living with other small pets if you introduce them early and with good training. Many Finnish Lapphunds will display these natural instincts effortlessly and are well suited to participating in herding trials, dog sports or agility. |
